Orlando is a hot bed of huge events happening all year long. From arts and music festivals to large downtown block parties, there is almost never a weekend where something isn’t happening in Orlando. With all of these events going on, and the combination of lots of people, lots of heat, and occasionally lots of drinking, there is always a chance that someone might have a change of behavior and become rude, belligerent, or just downright aggressive. When this happens, the right security guards can dissolve the situation with little to no major incident. Here’s how:
- Remain calm: no good comes from escalating the situation. A security guard will speak calmly and not reflect the aggressor’s behavior. That doesn’t mean the officer is not on guard; he or she just displays a relaxed demeanor. It’s important for ending the situation to maintain this demeanor in both words and actions.
- Let them talk: sometimes, the aggressor just needs to let off some steam. When they talk, the security guard should listen without interrupting or talking over them. If the aggressor starts to use obscenities, the security guard doesn’t respond in kind. They just listen, acknowledge, and hopefully the aggressor eventually calms down.
- Don’t argue: this goes back to remaining calm. Since the security guard doesn’t want to escalate, trying to argue or reason with an angry, aggressive person is not going to make it any better. If he says that the first president of Japan was George Washington, the guard knows it’s not worth trying to correct him.
- Don’t let things get physical: this is the absolute LAST thing anyone wants to occur. Officers will keep a safe distance and avoid any sort of contact that might prompt the aggressor to put up his dukes.
- If things do get physical, end it quickly: sometimes, no matter how much you let the aggressor talk and carry on, he might just be looking for a fight. Security guards are trained to end these situations quickly without anyone getting hurt. If that must occur, neutralize the aggressor and remove him from the event.
No matter what kind of event it is, there is one thing that all attending have in common: they want to have a good time. Aggressive attendants can ruin everyone’s fun. Security officers who know how to handle these situations can minimize the number of people affected by the aggressive behavior and end the situation quickly.
