As security guards, we provide a valuable service to local neighborhoods and communities where residents can feel safe as they visit a neighbor’s house or walk a dog. The communities where we can especially serve is one where the neighbors work together in making sure all are safe and secure.
Here are some tips to help each other:
- Be Social: It’s funny how there are neighbors right now who have never spoken to each other. Maybe never met! If you or your neighbors don’t know anything about each other, how can you know if something is wrong? It has been our experience that neighbors can be the ones to alert security to a potential issue. In one particular incident, a resident contacted the Apex Security officer at the gate and informed them that their neighbor’s garage door was left open and that seemed odd to them. The guard contacted the resident who was very thankful because it was an accident that the door was still open. All we are saying is the only way to notice something unusual or suspicious is if you know what is normal.
- Push for Improved Street Lighting: One of the biggest assets to any neighborhood is good lighting on the street. If the lighting can be better, seek out your HOA or local municipalities to get your street lighting improved. There are many studies out there that show better lighting can help deter crime, plus it allows for more social events to take place in your neighborhood, letting you improve relationships with your neighbors.
- Get Help When Traveling: If you’re going to be spending time out of town, ask your neighbors to help out. You could have a neighbor regularly check your mail or pick up the newspaper so there’s no indication of no one being home. They could even park their car in your driveway to further create that impression. That’s why you moved to a neighborhood to begin with: to help and be helped!
- Bring in a Security Team: Any established neighborhood can benefit from having a residential security team. From overnight patrols to gate attendants, a security team provides peace of mind to you and your neighbors and establishes a place that intruders want to avoid. Our teams can also help monitor community areas like pools and clubhouses.
Try these tips out. Encourage being neighborly with your neighbors. It sounds like such a foreign prospect sometimes, but the reason many communities become what they are, is because those living there are looking for that community feel. They work to provide a safe place for their kids to go trick-or-treating on Halloween and a place where neighbors get along.
