Construction sites like flies to honey are magnets for criminals. Construction sites are typically unguarded, wide open, and full of valuables. Tools, materials, appliances, fixtures, copper wire…the list goes on forever. As a foreman or a contractor, you need to take action to keep your sites, valuables, and employees safe.
Here are a few tips to keep your construction site safe.
Motion Sensing Lights
Motion sensing lights are one form of unmanned security that is typically pretty effective. Rather than keep the site lit all night, and burn a hole straight through your wallet, motion sensing lights will only illuminate the site when motion is detected. Site tech like this can effectively scare off hesitant intruders and petty thieves. If a trained criminal is planning to hit your site, they may not scare so easily. Nonetheless, motion sensitive lights are a relatively inexpensive way to partially secure your job site.
Fence
Fences have been around since the beginning of time in one form or another. Walls, barricades, etc. were all designed with the same purpose in mind – keep people out. Though for as long as fences have been present, they have been fooled. A fence is one of those items that you are foolish not to install, but you also can’t fully depend on. Fences function as security supplements – make sure you have one, but don’t place all of your faith in it. Additionally, fences might be important for liability reasons and keeping kids and troublemakers off a construction site where they might be prone to injury.
Inventory
Different criminals function in different ways. One criminal might rob your site blind in a single hit – high risk/high reward. Other criminals might sneak in and out of your site on a recurring basis, grabbing a small item or two each trip – low risk/low reward. With tactics like the latter, it is hard to notice when anything is gone, until a lot of stuff is gone. One way to maintain whether or not you are being looted is to keep a tight inventory. Keep a log of what tools and materials you have on the job site, and update it regularly with the appropriate quantities. This method will give you a better sense of your equipment, and maybe even prevent internal theft.
Talk to Your Employees
To some it’s common knowledge, to others it is not. Talk to your workers and ask them if they have noticed anything suspicious, or if they suspect any foul play. Maybe they have seen a car that repeatedly drives past the site that slows down or takes pictures. Maybe they have noticed that certain items have been missing, or that you have been short on a certain material. Your workers are your pulse, your ears on the street. Make sure to establish good communication with them for it may just prevent a crime.
Between the proper fencing, lighting, and unmanned security, you should cover a lot of your security needs, and cut the likelihood of a crime by a considerable amount. However you will never cover all of your bases. At least not without manned Orlando security guards.
